Rangers Caught Napping at the End

Having beaten today’s opponents 5-2 earlier in the season, Wareham Rangers U12’s might have been forgiven for thinking that their seven match unbeaten run would continue.  However, the Corfe Mullen United team had other ideas and played at a level and tempo that belied their league position.  Wareham started brightly, scoring after 3 minutes.  A penetrating through ball from Joe was latched onto by Christian who still had a lot to do; carving through the defence, Wareham’s on-form striker slotted the ball past the Corfe Mullen goalie.  A series of Wareham shots were blocked by the Corfe Mullen defence, but the Corfe Mullen attack always looked dangerous, bringing James into the action.  Wareham eased into a two goal lead when Christian controlled a strong pass (shot!) from Ethan before burying it in the back of the net.  However, Corfe Mullen were still looking dangerous on the counter-attack and scored a good goal from a through ball that spilt the Wareham defence open, leaving James with no chance.  Their defence kept the normally elusive Harry quiet, and Luke worked tirelessly on the right side of midfield but had little joy against his opposite number.  The half finished 2-1 to Wareham, but delicately balanced.

Corfe started the second half well and an uncharacteristic lack of communication in the Wareham defence led to Corfe Mullen tying the score up at 2-2.  Wareham then started to dominate; Samuel at right midfield and Christian linked well, culminating in an excellent through ball from Samuel being taken round the goalie by Christian for his hat-trick.  Nathan came on for Christian and made an excellent run and started to hold the ball up well.  With moves down the right between Alfie, Nathan and Dannon, Wareham continued with a dominant phase in the match.  Callum pressed hard on the left, and Alfie, Gabe and Ethan were looking solid again at the back.  Samuel was through on goal but his shot was blocked; minutes later his superb header was saved by a reaction stop by the Corfe Mullen goalie.  With less than ten minutes to go, the away supporters were quietly confident, (although not entirely).  However, a well-worked goal by Corfe Mullen tied the scores up at 3-3.  Worse was to come shortly afterwards as a further well-worked goal winged its way into the Wareham goal, stunning players and away supporters alike.  A minute later, and it was all over.

Manager Darren Mears commented ‘Although the lads worked hard on a heavy pitch, it was not quite enough against a stubborn Corfe Mullen side.  We gave the ball away too cheaply at times and were made to pay for not taking our chances.  Nevertheless, I am still impressed with how all players are developing both technically and in character.  I suppose that we all have a bad day at the office occasionally’.
